Our New Website is Live!

October 27, 2009

So at long last, we’ve launched an updated website! This one’s built on a blog platform so we can keep you up on the regular with what’s going on in our world, throw free music and swag your way (like the the free remix of Bassnectar’s Select Frequency that’s available on the page right now), and basically create a nice little one stop shop for all things Sub Swara for you. Also our brand new music and merch store is up and running (sorry for the crazy delay on this) and you can listen to a grip of tunes through the media player to the left and on the music pages. And now you can finally get the fly-as-hell Sub Swara t-shirts online.

Let us know what you think by dropping a comment and if you have any ideas on improvements, what’s working and what’s not, etc. we’d love to hear them!

Sub Swara on tour with EOTO: Last Stop, Chicago!

October 17, 2009

We got up early on Saturday morning and pointed our trusted, silver-hybrid steed in the direction of that jewel of the midwest, Chicago. Besides having a ton of in-laws in the City (ie, ALL of Oak and Forest Parks), both Dhruva and I have a bunch of old friends, and there’s a healthy world of Sub Swarans as well… thus, we KNEW this one was going to be a blast.

Having gotten into Chicago on the early side, we had a great, crisp fall afternoon to kill. We grabbed lunch with Chander, one of Dhruva’s crew from Michigan, and I headed out to see the fam while Dhruva & Chander held it down downtown. Walking down Michigan Ave never ceases to inspire me; the river, the architecture, the multiple layers of the city, the HUGE whomp of freezing lake air the sent me cowering into H&M to buy a hat. One of these days I’ll learn how to pack for tour.

A few hours later, we converged for soundcheck on the north side at the Abbey Pub. This show was fully sold-out, and we wanted to make sure that we had ample time to get our kit sounding as chest-rattlingly-awesome as possible.

In short: IT WORKED. We again ran the gamut of the Sub Swara sound, throwing in some Tortoise for local measure, some Clara Nunez for a bit of a Samba Enredo break before our remix of Mochipet’s “Complex Players,” and finishing it off with some–i kid you not– RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Dhruva and I’d been listening to a steady diet of early-90s altrock: Jane’s Addiction, Faith No More, RATM, etc… and really, there’s no reason why we can’t fit something like that into a set. To us, at times I think what we do translates as the dance-music extension of the vibe around that era in music; we can do ANYTHING provided we do it right. Thanks for doin it with us, Chicago, and doing in the floor:

yes: that’s the dancefloor from the bottom, during EOTO’s set. When we came downstairs after playing, Jason and Travis were goin nuts at how much the floor was moving during the Sub Swara set– now we know why!

now if only i had some video of myself and Travis giving each other the headbutt to end all headbutts….

Sub Swara on tour with EOTO: 2nd stop, Madison!

October 16, 2009

Man o MAN was i psyched to be back in Madison! Back when I lived in St. Louis, we’d play Madison a few times a year, and they were always off-the-rails good times; i remember getting woken up out of a too-partied-out slumber to dance the cha-cha at a Democratic Socialist rent party and then falling promtly back asleep.

After an amazing radio soundtrack leaving MPLS and “japanese” lunch at a food court at a mall in the exurbs, Dhruva and I rolled into Madison with just enough time to pass through Guitar Center– because, while i may have remembered the new pads, cables, stands, and cases, i forgot DRUMSTICKS. #drummerfail. The High Noon Saloon had that great Midwestern Venue vibe in which you feel like, yeah, the show could be amazing, or the night could end with someone we don’t know bailing us out of jail. Either way’s cool with Sub Swara, you know…

DJ Phil Money lookin righteous the middle of the crowd in Madison

(btw check our man @PhilMoney in the middle)

Nasty Nate warmed up the crowd with some heavy-hitting electro, and as we took the stage, it was pretty clear that the heads in the room were ready to dance. No pretense, very little of folks staring each other up and down… the dance space to be occupied was intense and we were ready for the challenge. We brought our DJ table up to the edge of the stage, as close as possible to the audience– in full on hi-five/chestbump range, truth be told.

I love gigs like this, where the divide between performer and audience is physically gone but we’re all vibing off each other. We had some ghosts in the machine for this one– ableton deciding to do weird things, glitches— but the audience was with us, sang along to our remix of “Waiting Room,” offered some karate chops and pogo-ing during “Glitterstep,” and got their hands in the air for Mochipet’s relick of our tune “Hi Fidelity”… don’t believe me?

Even though we couldn’t buy any ROOMBEER that night, we got the sleep of the just knowing that this is how it goes down! :)

THATS WASSUP

Yes yes y’all, the picture speaks a thousand words (though sadly none on our surprisingly-peppy rental Prius). Dhruva and I (Dave) recently did 3 shows across the Midwest with EOTO, featuring Jason and Travis from the String Cheese Incident on everything from Ableton Live to bongos to live drumset to synths to live edits via lemur. I gotta tell ya, i’ve played drums for almost 30 years and NOTHING i’ve seen comes close to Jason freaking out a room playing drumset, djembe, and Lemur.

So yes, completely next-level steez from our EOTO bredren. Dhruva and I arrived in Minneapolis slightly worse for the wear, courtesy of a tabla case with NO WHEELS and an almost-missed flight, but we were raring to go follwing the warm reception at the Cabooze and the really positive energy coming from Jason, Travis, and Chris, their homme du merch.

Our set was a rollicking affair, starting with some Sub Swara originals getting the live digi-dub treatment, going through some cumbia, ragga, soca and glitchy hiphop on up to dubstep, kuduro and points beyond with fresh heat from Joker, FSTZ, Octa Push and other bredren causing serious damage. We’ve recently added some live electronic percussion elements alongside the tabla, and were in a cavalier mood to just lay it all out– it must’ve worked because 10 minutes in, i looked up and the Minneapolis massive were HAVING it. MPLS crew, especially @mikethe2600king– we came in with our hearts on our sleeves and you guys threw down with us and then some. respect!

EOTO tore the roof off the club; they slinked through genres with real attitude, whipping the kinds into a frenzy, making it look like the cover of the first Youth of Today record. Amazing how the confluence of acoustic and electric is still so invigorating, and how dubstep is STILL the freshest thing. After a few hours rest and the NY times podcast (yes… nerd crew in effect), we packed it all up into our lil’ hybrid and pointed ourselves southwest towards Wisconsin…
